What the ULEZ checker London result actually tells you
The verdict above is derived from the vehicle record held by the DVLA — fuel type, engine and first registration date — compared against the emission standard Transport for London requires: Euro 4 for petrol, Euro 6 for diesel, Euro 3 for motorcycles. Battery-electric and hydrogen vehicles are compliant. As a rule of thumb most petrol cars registered from 2006 and most diesels from September 2015 meet the standard, but the rule of thumb is exactly what trips people up.
Two cars registered in the same month can fall on opposite sides of the line, because the Euro standard belongs to the engine's type approval rather than the registration date. Some 2014 diesels were already Euro 6; some early 2006 petrols were not Euro 4. That is why this result is indicative, and why the official TfL checker linked above is the answer that counts before you pay or drive.
If the verdict is non-compliant, the charge is £12.50 for each day the vehicle is driven anywhere inside Greater London — it is not a per-trip toll, and a single crossing of the boundary triggers the full day. Parking a non-compliant car without moving it costs nothing.
ULEZ, Congestion Charge and LEZ compared
Three separate schemes overlap in London and they are charged independently. The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all 32 boroughs and the City, 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day, at £12.50 for non-compliant cars, motorcycles and vans up to 3.5 tonnes. The Congestion Charge covers only the central zone, at £18 a day, 07:00–18:00 on weekdays and 12:00–18:00 at weekends, and applies to almost every vehicle regardless of emissions. The Low Emission Zone covers Greater London but targets heavier vehicles, with charges from £100 a day.
So a non-compliant car driven into central London on a Tuesday afternoon pays £30.50 in total. Both charges can be paid or set to Auto Pay through TfL, and both carry a penalty charge notice if you miss the payment window. Residents' discounts, disabled exemptions and historic vehicle exemptions exist and are applied for through TfL, not automatically.
Deciding whether to keep a non-compliant car is arithmetic, not principle: five chargeable days a month is £62.50, close to £750 a year before fuel, insurance or servicing. Against that, the cost of replacing the vehicle — or driving it less and cleaning it where it stands — is the honest comparison.
